Why Plastic & Tape Crawl Space Encapsulation Fails
The most common way to encapsulate a crawlspace is with high quality plastic sheeting and tapes that are made and marketed for use in a crawlspace. Often these systems will require the use of a large dehumidifier perpetually afterwards for one main reason – the seal you are looking between the pieces of plastic and the joins to concrete or pipe penetrations is only done with 4 inch tape. Plastic and tape makes for an attractive photo, but does lack the longevity and initial seal of a high performance seamless system such as the Nu-Crawl System. Even high quality plastics cannot offer protection from puncturing. Let’s face it the gravel or rough concrete that may be under the liner will cut through pretty quickly if used for storage, or will occur even during installation. The biggest flaw of plastic and tape systems is the tape used, because any tape relies on adhesives, which will fail over time due to moisture or drying, either way it is hard to expect a perfect job and expect it to last.
Crawlspace encapsulation systems relying on plastic and tape are often criticized for their lack of longevity and unreliable sealing. The primary flaw lies in the adhesives used in the 4-inch tape, which are prone to failing over time due to moisture or drying, compromising the seal between plastic sheets and foundation surfaces. This method also makes the plastic liner vulnerable to punctures from rough underlayment and struggles to properly adhere to porous concrete or brick foundations. Consequently, plastic and tape installations are often imperfect and less durable compared to seamless alternatives like the Nu-Crawl system.

Beyond the obvious flaw of using tape, there is a complete misrepresentation by installation companies that the liner can be fixed to the top of the foundation. Any foundation type will be made with porous concrete block, poured concrete or porous brick. Adhesives, and even canned foam cannot successfully join to the slick surface of the plastic liners. The process of plastic and tape installation is tedious and quite imperfect.
